Why is play important?

Why Is Play Important?

Play is essential for a child's holistic development. It builds their confidence, sparks curiosity, and helps them make sense of the world. Through child-led discovery and adult-guided activities, children learn how to think critically, solve problems, and connect with others.

The Core Benefits of Play

  • Brain Development & Mindset: Play and exploration actively stimulate neural pathways, foster imagination, build mental flexibility, and encourage resilience by showing children that mistakes are a natural part of learning.

  • Emotional Growth: It provides a safe space to process emotions, explore fears and anxieties, and build self-assurance when facing new challenges.

  • Social & Collaborative Skills: Children learn whether playing independently, alongside peers, or cooperatively with groups and adults.

What Play Actually Offers Children

Play creates everyday opportunities for children to:

  • Make choices, decisions, and follow their own lines of enquiry.

  • Use their own ideas, creativity, and imagination.

  • Experiment, test new behaviours, and practise familiar skills.

  • Exercise, develop, and coordinate both body and mind.

  • Adapt knowledge, negotiate with others, and learn from imitation.

  • Make sense of puzzling situations, events, or equipment.

  • Have fun, build friendships, and connect with familiar adults.
